Penn Yan Carry Canoe

Carrylite.jpg

As I remember, the carry canoe that I worked on had red cedar ribs- brittle. I believe that I actually used red cedar ribs to replace the originals. Soaked for two days in order to keep from breaking. But, being a Penn Yan, yours could have white cedar ribs. Production was paramount!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the pic Dan. Gil, the ribs are like a cartopper, they may be red cedar. I’ll get some pics of this one posted this weekend.

I must say, there are some really cool things that show up on/in this forum. This is one. A demi canoe that has decent lines! Brilliant.

Here's some pics of the carry canoe

The Carry Canoe was offered in Penn Yan catalogs from 1940 to 1949. Notice how it was changed as shown in the catalog pages below.

This page is from 1940:

1940 page 27.jpg

This page is representative of the 1940-1947 catalogs:

1942 PAGE-37.jpg

And this page is representative of 1948-1949.

Thanks for posting that Dan. That’s interesting info. It’s hard to see but the serial number on the canoe I posted is FX 48 110. From your website we know FX is the code for the carry canoe, 48 is the year built which matches up to your page above and the 110? I’m guessing the 110th one built that year? Thanks again to everyone for the input about this canoe.

I can tell from up here that MGC is fawning over those deck rings, and cant wait to hoist that hull into the rafters.
