Outboard Shaft Length

LOVES Wooden Canoes
There have been several posts here requesting information on outboard motor shaft length for Y stern canoes. I recently finished a Canadian Canoe Co. 16' Y stern. If the transom height was measured from the lowest point on the keel, it was 19-20". Following the guidelines for outboard shaft length on a standard transom-type boat, this would indicate the need for a long shaft. But because of the shape of the aft end of the canoe and the fact that the boat squats a little due to some rocker in the bottom, the cavitation plate on my short shaft Mercury 3.3 is well below the water under power. I think a long shaft would be a detriment, especially in shallow water on this boat.
