Hello,
I've got an older Old Town canoe. It's got sponsons and is quite heavy. It needs some work as we just removed it from a collapsed barn. Serial # is 20097 18.
Thanks for any info, Jake

The Old Town record for number 20097 shows an 17 foot long canoe without sponsons. My guess is that you have the 18 foot long Carleton canoe with this serial number. It was shipped as a Carleton model in Reg. (Regular or middle) grade with open spruce gunwales, oak decks, oak thwarts, oak seats, a keel, and sponsons. It was built between January and July, 1931. The original exterior paint color was dark red. It shipped on July 23rd, 1921 to Wawarsing, New York. A scan showing both build records can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below.

These scans and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Good luck with the restoration,

Benson
