Old Town Canoe S/N 137628 18

Trying to find some info on this wood canoe. From my research, I believe it is an Old Town. I'm pretty sure the Serial number is 137628 18. (I know the 18 means it's 18 foot.) It has been re-painted at least once and I had to use paint thinner to remove some of the paint over the number, but I'm fairly confident that I got the number correct. The canoe has several diamond-head bolts, but a few have been replaced. I need to do a full restoration on it. Has some rot in the stern and possibly a little in the bow. Won't know for sure until I get it stripped. Also it has sponsons. I can post some pictures later if needed.

Thanks,
Charlie

The Old Town canoe with serial number 137628 is an 18 foot long, CS (Common Sense or middle) grade, HW (heavy water) model with open spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, a keel, a floor rack, and sponsons. It was built between May and August, 1943. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on September 9th, 1943 to Baltimore, Maryland. A scan showing this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Everyone here always likes pictures so please indulge us. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions,

Benson

I'm sad to say that it looks like I'm going to have to sell this canoe. I'm going to be moving in the next month and I won't be able to take it with me.
It's in pretty rough shape and needs a full restoration. I believe the majority of the wood in the hull is in good shape, but there is some rot in the stern and possibly some in the bow as well, and of course it will need to be re-covered. If anyone is interested, it is located in Elkton, MD (21921), and I just want to make sure it finds a good home. Would like to get $100 for it, but will take offers.
