LOVES Wooden Canoes
My latest purchase was an OT Yankee ca 1952, 156997 16. A copy of the build sheet would be nice, so thanks to you guys that can provide a copy. As for condition, there are 8 broken ribs, some tender areas of planking and the tips are just tender, the stern deck is broken. That can be aligned, glued and reinforced with an inlayed butterfly underneath for extra strength. That is not an sect like inlay but sort of a double triangle look "point to point", see Nakashima furniture to get a better understanding. New bent ribs and planking purchased in 1974 came with it as did 17 ft of #8 canvas. I think I will save the canvas for something else and get some #10 or possible #12 and go toward the lighter side of things. It has copper bang strips that meet up with aliminum along the keel. Seat bolts and all screws for the outer rails were missing.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 156997 is a 16 foot long, CS (Common Sense) grade, Yankee model with western red cedar planking, open spruce gunwales and a keel. It was built between January and June, 1952. The original exterior paint color was bright red. It was shipped on June 27th, 1952 to Pontiac, Michigan. The back side of the record indicates that a copy of this build record was sent to Union Lake, Michigan in October of 1973. A scan showing both sides of this build record can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below.

These scans and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Better late than never? Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions and I will try to respond more quickly.
