Greetings,
I have OT #81100 17 in my basement and plan to restore it. This canoe has half ribs and seems to be in pretty good shape except that it has been glassed :( Needs new gunnels and some seat repair. I would appreciate any information you can provide.

Thanks!
Robert

The Old Town canoe with serial number 81100 is a 17 foot long, AA (or top) grade, Ideal model with red western cedar planking, open mahogany gunwales, mahogany decks, mahogany thwarts, mahogany seats, half ribs, and a keel. It was built between October, 1925 and January, 1926. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It was shipped on February(?) 11th, 1926 to New York City where it appears to have been loaded on a boat to Ellaville, Florida. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Good luck with the restoration,

Benson

Benson,
I did a wee bit of internet research and it looks like this canoe was shipped to the Noegel's in Ellaville Florida. Henry Charles Noegel opened Camp Suwannee, "a campground for vacationist and travelers" on the Suwannee River in 1921. Here is a photo of Henry and Charles on the Camp Suwannee Store steps in the early 1920's. Thanks again for the build card,
Robert
