Old Town Search for Serial # 113769

Enthusiastic about Wooden Canoes
Have just acquired another Old Town which I am committed to restore.... Would like to know more about it.. It is a 17' model with serial number 17 - 113769. It was owned by a couple in Northwest Wisconsin who say it was purchased new by the parents of a close friend many years ago. It has several cracked ribs and needs new gunnels inside and out, but is definitely restoreable and will be a beauty when finished. Can you find and provide the mfg invoice on this canoe. Harold

The Old Town canoe with serial number 113769 is a 17 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, Otca model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, oak decks, oak thwarts, oak seats, and a keel. It was built between March, 1934 and January, 1935. The original exterior paint color was maroon. The lack of a shipping date or destination make it a highly unusual record. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Good luck with the restoration,

Benson

Harold,
I've found that Pettit Burgundy paint is a good match for Old Town Maroon, should you want to go to original color.

Dave... This forum and you guys who monitor it are really something special... The Maroon paint thing is way ahead of my thinking at the moment but was sure to be an issue when I get in to this restoration.... Thank you... Am hoping to have the Morris Torpedo done by the September Boulder Junction event... Understand Katheren Kloss will be there. Would like to show it to her... the book she wrote on these old BN Morris canoes is a very valuable resource... Dave... The family that sold me this 1935 Old Town wants first dibs to buy it back when it is done... it is one way for me to avoid becoming stuck with unsaleable restored canoes and they probably will get it restored a lot cheaper that way than contracting with a pro to do it. Will see you Thursday. Harold
