Hey folks, this canoe has been in a barn for 40+ years and I would like to find out more about it. The serial# is 154887, 154987 or 154087 it is hard to tell. Just had it revarnished and put the Evinrude 3.5 on. Looking to register it and take the family out on our anniversary! I would like an outboard to match the actual year the canoe was made and get the recommended Horse Power. Thanks

The Old Town with serial number 154887 is an 15 foot long canoe and the one with 154087 is a 15 foot long lapstrake outboard motor boat so my guess is that you the one with serial number 154987. This is a 16 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, square stern model with red western cedar, open spruce gunwales, a keel, outside stems, and a floor rack. It was built between November, 1950 and January, 1951. The original exterior paint color was dark green enamel. It shipped on June, 4th, 1951 to Fryeburg, Maine.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your boat. The 1951 catalog description of this model says "it performs beautifully with 2 1/2 to 10 H.P. motors." More information like this is available from http://store.wcha.org/The-Complete-Old-Town-Canoe-Company-Catalog-Collection-CD-ROM.html in the catalog collection. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Have fun on your anniversary,

Benson

Thank you, 154987 would seem accurate thanks for the prompt response. I will be in search of a 1950-51 outboard to match. My Wife and daughters 6/8 yrs cant wait to use it. We have the oars and oarlocks which worked perfectly! Now we will see how it handles with an outboard.
