Old Town 173372 16

I saw this in a barn today. The owner pulled it off the town dump several years ago and it's been in the barn ever since. The wood seems perfect to me - no rot at the stems or gunnels. Seats are still whole, but who knows how strong? Some fresh varnish and new canvas would result in a nice canoe for someone. Is there a build sheet for this? Thanks. Al

Hi Al--

Old Town 173372 is a 16 foot Otca model canoe finished October-December of 1963. It has a keel and was originally painted OT design #46. It was shipped to Fernald's Marina in Newbury, MA, on June 4, 1964. The reverse of the record card shows an inquiry from Cheboygan, Michigan 8/26/86.The scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you and anyone else reading this will join or renew membership in the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to renew.

I've also attached an image of design #46, courtesy "The Complete Old Town Canoe Company Catalog Collection, 1901- 1993", available on CD from http://www.wcha.org/catalog/ and http://www.dragonflycanoe.com/cdrom.htm on the web.

Looks like it's in good shape--- amazing what people take to the dump! It's a lucky find.

Kathy

Thanks, Kathy, for that information, which I will pass along to the owner. I probably should make him an offer to buy it, but have no idea of it's value. Any suggestions?? Al

That's a very helpful source of information, Benson. Thank you. The fourth pictue of my original post shows the nameplate. Not too clearly, as I had to climb over lots of junk to get the pics. Should I go back and try to get a better shot of the plate?? Al

I thought that your fourth picture showed the stern deck with the Fernald's Marine plate on it. Your first picture appears to show a small bit of the red bar on an Old Town name plate. It is not a big deal if you can't easily get a picture of the other deck. Thanks,

Benson

You're right, Benson - that is the rear deck. I will go back this afternoon and see if I can get a shot at the front deck and I'll post the result, if there's anything to see!! Al
