Old town serial #

Congratulations, the Old Town canoe with serial number 94809 is a 16 foot long, AA (or top) grade, Torpedo model with red Western cedar planking, open mahogany gunwales, mahogany decks, mahogany thwarts, mahogany seats, a keel, and outside stems. It was built between May and June, 1927. The original exterior paint design was similar to the one shown at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/designs/design23.gif which was know as the design number 23. It shipped on July, 1st, 1927 to Cranford, New Jersey. A scan showing this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match. Please provide some pictures if the original design is still showing. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

haven't had much luck researching the Torpedo model. Think it refers to the outside stems.

The Old Town torpedo model was never listed in any catalog. A 'torpedo' stem was elongated as shown and described in the 1968 catalog page for the Molitor model below. Can you supply any pictures of your canoe, especially a side view of the end?

Interesting, this torpedo is less extreme than the later version of the Molitor. It appears to be the same as the earlier version of the Molitor as shown in the first two links below.

There was another request for a similar canoe recently as described in the third link below. This canoe was offered for sale a few years ago with the picture shown at the end.
