Hi every one. I finally got the paint stripped off where I was told the Serial number would be and I was lucky enough to find one. I believe it is in Oldtown based solely on the diamond head bolts and any information you could find would be awesome. I can't wait to get to reply and thank you in advance

The Old Town canoe with serial number 80980 is 16 feet long, CS (common sense or standard) grade, Otca model with western red cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, birch decks, thwarts, and seats, equipped with a keel and floor rack. It was built between October of 19 23 and May of 1925, with finishing complete with a revarnishing on May 21, 1925. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on May 29, 1925 to Camp Kearsarge in some town in Maine that I cannot decipher (Mallochs?). A scan of this build record can be found by following the link behind the thumbnail image attached below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. If that is the case, photographs of the deck, side profile, seats, and other details would be helpful in identifying the canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Wow, thanks for such a fast response Greg. That matches the boat exactly! I'm so happy to have solved the "mystery"!!! What a great resource this is. I'll post pictures for others to see but I think I made a great find and got a steal on it for the condition it is!

I did some poking around to try to learn what the build record says about where the canoe was shipped. There is no town in Maine that is anything close to “Mallocks” or “Maltochs” or whatever that word is.

However, I learned that there was a Camp Kearsarge operating in Naples, Maine in the 1920’s. A 1919 Handbook of Private Schools says this about the camp:

“Camp Kearsarge, Naples, on Long Lake, was opened in 1918 by Miss Helen Culin, A.B., who is in charge of the Physical Education Department of Swarthmore College. It is primarily for older girls. Emphasis is laid upon canoe trips.”

http://books.google.com/books?id=lW...EwAg#v=onepage&q=camp kearsarge maine&f=false

So while I don’t know what that name or word in the build record is, there seems to have been only one camp Kearsarge in Maine, where your canoe started out taking girl campers on canoe trips.
