Curious about Wooden Canoes
I was recently given an Old Town sailing canoe as a gift from my grandfather. Serial number 156755. It is in very good shape and I had it out on the water this weekend for the first time in at least 30 years. Currently red with sponsons and the sailing rig. He says that he bought it in 1980 in coastal Maine. I would love to have more information. Thanks in advance.

The Old Town with serial number 156755 is a 16 foot long HW (heavy water) model with western red cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, a keel, and sponsons. It was built between November, 1951 and August, 1952. The original exterior paint color was bright red. It was shipped on August 7th, 1952 to Camden, Maine. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description don't match your canoe. The sailing rig is not mentioned on the build record so that was probably added after it left the factory. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thank you very much. It's great to know how this canoe started its life. The interesting thing is that I got is as a birthday gift and coincidentally it appears that the canoe was completed on the same date as my birthday, just several years before I was born. Very cool. Thanks again.
