The Old Town, Carleton, and Kennebec canoes with serial number 8189 are all 16 feet long. Can you take some pictures of the numbers and surrounding area from each end and post them here to see if there may be any hidden digits? The tips at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?791 may also help. Many other builders used a similar numbering scheme. Some pictures of the decks, interior, and the rest of the canoe may also help identify it. It would also be good to confirm the extreme overall length of your canoe in a straight line as well. Thanks,

Benson

Old Town Serial number correction

Hi Benson

Thanks for the help looks like 81896 a closer look at the serial number reveals a possible 6 as the last digit with a space followed with the length of 17. I have attached pictures to help in the research as to the origin and model of my Canoe.

Thanks again I look forward to hearing from you.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 81896 is a 17 foot long, AA (or top) grade, HW (Heavy Water) model with red western cedar planking, open mahogany gunwales, a keel, a floor rack, outside stems, floor rack, and sponsons. It was built between November, 1923 and April, 1924. The original exterior paint was dark red. It shipped on June 28th, 1924 to Dover, New Hampshire. A scan showing this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Benson
