Old Town OCTA

Well, I can tell you that the Old Town canoe with serial number 79932 is 16 feet long and number 179932 is a 25 foot long war canoe that shipped to Keuka College. Number 79982 is a nine foot long dinghy. Can you provide some pictures of your canoe, especially ones showing the serial numbers from each end, the decks, and confirm the actual overall length? You may want to review the information at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?791 to see if any of the suggestions there can help to clarify these numbers. Which digit is the least clear?

The Old Town canoe with serial number 70882 is a 17 foot long, AA (or top) grade, Otca model with red western cedar planking, open mahogany gunwales, mahogany decks, mahogany thwarts, mahogany seats, a keel, and a floor rack. It was built between March and May, 1922. The original exterior paint color was dark red. It shipped on May 19th, 1922 to Smiths, Mass. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the thumbnail image attached below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

There is a lot of information about the Otca available on the WCHA web site and from http://store.wcha.org/The-Complete-Old-Town-Canoe-Company-Catalog-Collection-CD-ROM.html in the catalog collection.
