Old Town L 3249 16

I just got this canoe. I have searched High an lo, I need help please to find what model it is and if possible date of manufacture. I think the "L" means long decks.
Second question: The seats are gone. Are they availiable somewhere to purchase? I have hangers and diamond bolts. thanks in advance Jerry H.

James,

Is it possible that the serial number has more digits and that the "L" is actually a number? Many manufacturers used strings of numbers- 3 to 6 or even 8 digits- followed by the length (i.e. "16"). An "L" alone in front of the serial number is unusual. You mention loing decks- canoes from the Charles River area around Boston often had 4-digit serial numbers and long decks. A number like "3249 16" would be appropriate for (but not exclusive to) a Charles River-area builder.

Photos, especially of decks, stem, serial number, thwarts, and deck support structure, would be very helpful in identifying your canoe. If you need advice on picture posting, see:

The Old Town canoe with serial number 173249 is a 16 foot long Otca model with a keel. It was built between August and September, 1963. The original exterior paint color was pale blue. It shipped on September 10th, 1963 to Canadaigua, New York. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link under the thumbnail image attached below.

This scans was created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. Additional information about the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or contribute to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.html to join.

Replacement seats are available from the factory as shown at http://oldtown.wcha.org/parts.html with part number 01.1315.2542. Many of the restorers listed at http://www.wcha.org/buildsupply/ may be willing to sell you a set of replacement seats.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Benson
