Old Town plastic 17ft canoe with a stamped serial number 211984. Anyone know what model this canoe is. Needs a new yoke and an awful repair with epoxy and fiberglass cloths. The hull is not worn through but needs sanding and some kind of filler and sanding along with paint.

Welcome, the Old Town canoe with serial number 211984 is a 17 foot long Chipewyan Tripper model with aluminum inserts in the rails that weighed 76 pounds. It was built in January, 1976. The original exterior color was avocado. It shipped on April 15th, 1976 to Boston, Massachusetts. The back side of this scan shows that there were some skin breaks on the inside and outside of the hull along with a soft line on the inside. Scans of both sides of this build record can be found below.

These scans and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to donate or join.

It is also possible that this canoe could have another number or manufacturer if the description doesn't match. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Good luck with the repairs.

Benson

Wes, I always tell people that old canoes have 3 problems:
1) rot from improper storage
2) impact damage
3) poor quality earlier repairs.
Your canoe wins the prize for worst earlier repairs!
But almost everything is fixable. If you search this forum for epoxy+filler (not canvas filler) you can find a lot of good info.
