I have a 17' Old Town Charles River Canoe Serial Number 82097 it needs some restoration with the gunnels and the canves need replacing.. The interior and exterior of the hull overall is in very good shape .. My Question is what year is this canoe and what is the average value before and after restoration. Thank You

The Old Town canoe with serial number 82097 is a 17 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, HW (Heavy Water) model with red western cedar planking, closed spruce gunwales, birch decks, birch thwarts, birch seats, and a keel. It was built between December, 1923 and July, 1925. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on June 30th, 1926 to Auburn, Maine.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

You may have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. The messages at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?57 are the best information about the worth of a canoe like yours. The classifieds at http://classifieds.wcha.org/ are often one of the fastest ways to find a good new home for a canoe like this if you plan to sell it. It is usually not worth attempting any repairs or restoration if your plan is to sell it. Please feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
