I have an old town canoe that my grandfather supposedly recieved as a graduation present in 1917. The serial number is 29092. Does anyone have any info on the canoe?

Hello,

Old Town 29092 is a 17 foot AA (top) grade Charles River model canoe with Western red cedar planking, closed mahogany gunwales, mahogany decks, mahogany thwarts and mahogany seat frames, outside stems, a keel, and a floor rack. Original color was dark red. It was shipped to an individual in Danielson Connecticut on July 20, 1915. The scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you and anyone else reading this will join or renew membership in the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to renew.

Does this description match your canoe? It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

It's wonderful to have a family canoe, and it sounds like yours is a nice one. Any pictures?

Kathy

Your Old Town canoe with serial number 29092 probably dates back to around 1914. You might want to check Old Town's serial number records or contact them directly for more details. It's a wonderful piece of history!
