Old Town Canoe research

I'm trying to help my father (he's 89) find out more about an old wooden canoe he has. I believe it's an Old Town based on the Diamond head bolts & the cut out shape on the stern & bow decks. It has Serial # 110879. It's 17" and I think it's a sponson model.

He interested in selling it so any guidance on that would also be appreciated. We're in north/central New Jersey. It seems to be in pretty good shape tho the outside gunwale strips need replacing & original seat caning is relaced with what looks to be covered wire(?) woven thru the origianl wood seat holes. He re-canvassed it in the 1960's when he got it.

Thanks for any help

Old Town #110879 is a 17' HW model built in CS (Common Sense) grade with ash decks, seats and thwarts. It did have sponsons. It's original color was maroon. It was delivered to Newark, NJ in April of 1932, returned to the factory for repairs in early winter of 1933. There is no indication of what the damage was, but it apparently involved recanvassing, since there are notations about filling on the back of the record. Copies are attached.

Scans of approximately 210,000 records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. Additional information about the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. Please join WCHA or make a tax deductable contribution so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.html to join. If you are already a WCHA member, THANK YOU!

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thanks!

Mike -
Thanks for the info on the canoe - seems to match. Tho it's hard to read, looks kike the canoe was sent to Bamberger's which was a large department store (bought out by Macy's around 25 years ago).
