My husband just acquired an Old Town Canoe and we are looking for info on it, especially what the year made was, what the original color was and possibly obtaining the original shipping receipt. It also came with sail rigging. Hull #73651 17. Photos attached.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 73651 is a 17 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, Otca model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, birch decks, birch thwarts, birch seats, a keel, a floor rack, and two B. P. (brass painter?) rings. It was built between October, 1922 and January, 1923. The original exterior paint color was gray with a blue stripe and leaf ends edged in gold. This may have been similar to the one shown at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/designs/design45.gif with a single color hull and no rub rails. It shipped on March 17th, 1923 to Dover, New Jersey. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description don't match your canoe. The sail rig was probably added after it left the factory since this isn't mentioned on the build record. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Benson

Cheaton,

Welcome to the WCHA. There are a bunch of dedicated canoe sailors here so I'm sure all the questions that arise as you restore it will be answered. You have a Old Town Otca model. Someone will chime in with the build record which should show the year, construction details and where it was shipped. Did your canoe come with a rudder, lee boards and lee board bracket? You will need them for sailing. Those parts are available with some searching, but you have to restore the canoe before you need to worry about sailing. I am in the Hudson Valley not that far from Hopatcong if you want to talk.

Good luck with your project.
Jim C.
