Curious about Wooden Canoes
I have just recently acquired Old Town(I was told) #45258 16. It is in rough shape, but I want to restore it to its former glory. I am new to this so I would appreciate any info you could give me! Types of wood used for various parts? Also, it appears to have some equipment as part of the front seat frame to accept a mast or sail rigging??? Thanks, and I will anxiously await a response!!!

Probably the best single starting place is the book "The Wood and Canvas Canoe" by Jerry Stelmok and Rollin Thurlow -- readily available, including from the WCHA online store, Amazon, often eBay, etc.

They discuss materials, techniques, etc. to the point you may not have any other questions, but if you do, people here can and will give you much more directed advise on your specific questions.

You can also use the search function in these forums -- lots of information is already out there.

Good luck with your sailing canoe!

This may not be your canoe. Take a closer look at the stem number in both stems. SS# 45258 was assigned to a 17' Charles River in CS grade delivered to Boston, MA in April 1919. (copy attached) The "16 in your boat indicates that is was a 16' boat.

I took a look at SS#45253, a common mis-read for an 8 and found is was a 18' CS Grade HW. (Copy also attached)

Scans of approximately 210,000 records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. Additional information about the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.Take a closer look at the stem numbers and get back to us.

My eyes are failing me!!!

Sorry, I thought I could read it so clearly? In comparing it to the "6" in "16", I can see very clearly that it is #45256 16. Thanks, KURT

Think we got it this time. 45256 was issued to a 16' HW (heavy water) model in CS (common sense) grade with spruce rails, and maple decks, seats and thwarts. This one had a mast seat and step, full length bang plate on the keel and was painted dark green. It had a monogram "RFR" (initials of the purchaser) on the bow. It was shipped in July 1917 to Castle Park, MI. A 1983 notation on the back of the build record indicated that the boat had made it's way to St. Paul, MN.

Thank You!!

Thank you so much for the research! I can see what the option of the mast seat is but can anyone tell me what the reference to "and step" means? Also "full length bang plate and keel" ( know what this is, but what would it have been made of/looked like originally)? Are there photos somewhere that I can see what these options would look like? As I said earlier, this canoe is in rough shape, and covered in fiberglass:mad: . I am interested in resoring it to original so any info on these two options that anyone could give would be great! Thanks again for the research on the serial number, this site is great! KURT
