Curious about Wooden Canoes
Just was given an Old Town Canoe Serial Number 17 5048 16.
I plan to re canvas. Several questions.
First, type of canoe, date of Manufacture, and maybe original colors. Initial cost and any other info

. I think I have all of the original parts, wood is in great condition although very dry. except for the canvas which was removed some years ago. I will go over to the other thread area for questions on finnish, restoration etc.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 175048 is a 16 foot long Guide model with narrow two and 3/4 inch planking, a keel, and the stern seat was moved two inches forward of the usual location. It was built between July and August, 1965. The original exterior paint color was red and it shipped on August 16th, 1965 to Colebrook, New Hampshire. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. This canoe listed for $280 in the 1965 catalog. More information like this is available from http://store.wcha.org/The-Complete-Old-Town-Canoe-Company-Catalog-Collection-CD-ROM.html in the Old Town Canoe Company Catalog Collection. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
