I received a 17' Old Town Canoe with dimensions (17' long, 35" wide, 13" tall) and serial number (117861 17) and would appreciate any info or history on it. Thank you all in advance! Bobby

The Old Town canoe with serial number 117861 is a 17 foot long, AA (or top) grade, Otca model with red Western cedar planking open mahogany gunwales, mahogany decks, mahogany thwarts, mahogany seats, a keel, outside stems, a floor rack, and rub rails. It was built between May, 1936 and August, 1938. The original exterior paint color was similar to the one shown at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/designs/design23.gif which was known as the design number 23. It shipped on September 23rd, 1938 to Holyoke, Mass. after being exhibited at the Eastern States Exposition. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link behind the thumbnail image attached below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. Please attach some pictures if the original exterior design is still showing. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Good luck,

Benson
