Old Town 314544-15

Wooden Canoes are in the Blood
It also has a narrow, black, tin or plastic tag riveted to a side that reads XTC14645A889. Any idea what this indicates?

And it was fiberglassed. Was it done at the factory?

Well, this is odd. An Old Town canoe with serial number 314544 on the stems should have a hull identification number tag starting with XTC14544 and one with a hull identification number tag of XTC14645A889 should have serial number 314645 on the stems. Unfortunately, the build records for neither of these numbers have been scanned so there is little more that I can offer. There is a build record for serial number 314644 which shows a canoe that fiberglassed at the factory so it is likely that your canoe was too. The hull identification number indicates that yours was made in January (or August), 1988 for the 1989 model year. Sorry,

Benson

Well, maybe I misread the numbers.

I got another pic of the tag, and I did misread it. I think it reads XTC14644A989, and not XTC14645A889

The Old Town canoe with serial number 314644 is a 16 foot long guide model with fiberglass in place of canvas, a keel, mahogany decks, and mahogany thwarts. It weighed 78 pounds and was built between August and October, 1988. The original exterior fiberglass was left clear to show the natural wood. It shipped on January 18th, 1989 to Portland, Maine. A scan showing this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/pricing-plans/join to donate or renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Benson
