Curious about Wooden Canoes
Hi, I need to know any and all information on an 18 foot Old Town canoe with serial number 45585 18, it is stamped on one stem only.

Thanks,

The Old Town with serial number 45585 is an 18 foot long, GS grade, IF (Ideal Fishing) or Guide's model canoe with Western red cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash trim, a keel, and outside stems. It was built between October, 1916 and May, 1917. The original exterior paint color was gray. It shipped on May 15th, 1917 to Springfield, Massachusetts. The back side of the card indicates that it may have moved to East Longmeadow, Massachusetts by February 10th, 1982 when a previous request for a copy of the build record was answered. Scans of both sides of this build record can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below.

These scans were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. Additional information about the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.html to join.

The best source for additional information about this canoe is the Old Town catalog CD from http://merchandise.wcha.org/product_info.php?cPath=90_91&products_id=404 or http://www.dragonflycanoe.com/cdrom.htm on the web.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description don't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Old Town 18' Canoe

Benson, thank you very much, I found this canoe today in East Longmeadow, Ma. rather in dire need of restoration, stems are good, planking and ribs are also good, what I could see two to four ribs need replacing, decks and gunnells need replacing and new canvass, along with keel.

Thanks again,

Art
