Hello, Charles-- and welcome!

Old Town number 173398 is a 17 foot Otca model, built between October and December of 1963. It has a keel and was originally painted pale blue. It was shipped to Forrest Marine Company in Tyngsboro, Massachusetts, on April 6, 1964.

The canoe was originally canvassed in October of '63, and if the surface is now fiberglass you may want to use the "search" function above to find old discussions regarding this. Fiberglass can be the death-knell for ribbed canoes, and the archives here in "forums" hold many discussions of this which include care of the canoe if you don't want to tackle fiberglass removal at the present time. Sounds like your canoe is in usable shape.

Please ask questions, if you have any-- I'm not telling you to stick to past replies to other people's questions, but want you to know there's stuff you can read which might help you decide what questions to ask.

The "search" function should also provide interesting stuff about the Otca model... and I also like to suggest Sue Audette's book, "Old Town, Our First Hundred Years" to anyone new to wood/canvas ownership, especially if it's an Old Town.

The scan of your canoe's original build record is attached below. Click on the thumbnail to get a larger-than-life copy. Scans of approximately 210,000 records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. Additional information about the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details.
