Old Town #170776

Alex Comb

Canoeist/Builder/Restorer
I am restoring an 18' Square stern Old Town. This is the first of this type I have seen and am curious to know more. The serial number is 170776, though the last digit may be a 5, its a bit unclear. Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Alex

Hi Alex,
776 seems to fit... 170776 is on an 18' Square End model (Possible "River"?) with half ribs, keel, outside stems and sponsons. It was originally equipped with a rowing seat and was painted white. It was shipped to Stillwater, MN in May of 1961. A copy of the build record is attached.

I also looked up 775 - it is on a lapstrake boat.

Scans of approximately 210,000 records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. Additional information about the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. Please join WCHA or make a tax deductable contribution so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA, http://www.wcha.org/wcha_video.php to watch a 10 minute video about WCHA and our programs and http://www.wcha.org/join.html to join. If you are already a WCHA member, THANK YOU!

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thanks Mike, thats definitely the boat - and its still white. You think it says "River" for model? Seems completely illegible. I'll have to research this model a bit more. Its a very interesting boat.

DUH! Dan is right - the writing just continued down another line.
