Old Town 114449 16 Sponson Sail Canoe

Ronald Young

Curious about Wooden Canoes
Looking for build records and any info available for this canoe. It is in excellent condition except some paint is chipping on the sponsons. Any idea of the value would be appreciated (we paid $3,000):( . We were told it was 1911 vintage but I now believe it is mid 1030's. It was repainted with Kirby's "Bottle Green", probably not original color. I think I figured how to rig the sail but would like to be sure. Any rigging instructions or diagrams would be appreciated.

You can find a previous request for this serial number that shipped in 1935 and was answered at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?t=2292 with a copy of the build record. There is a good summary of how to value your canoe at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?t=57 and $3000 is less than some similar canoes which are currently listed at http://classifieds.wcha.org/ in the classifieds. The most complete information about how to rig a sailing canoe is in Todd Bradshaw's book "Canoe Rig - The Essence and the Art" which is available from http://woodencanoe.org/catalog/prod...d=436&osCsid=bf74106cdfcc463ffc2d3f5c76b2f51a and other sources. The pictures attached at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?t=1372 show how a similar canoe is rigged. Feel free to reply here or to your message in the sailing section if this doesn't answer your question.
