old town 100097-18

Silkworth canoe

New Member
I am searching for info. regarding my Old Town Canoe serial # 100097-18.

It is a sailing model with the hole in the front thwart, also has floatation sponsons and wooden slats running lenghtwise that are removable ( comes out in one piece). Also, there is a brass plate on one deck plate that reads " Manufactured expressly for Harry W Reinhart Athletic and sporting goods Scranton, Pa.

Any help would really be appreciated, I am planning on refinishing the inside, replacing rotted deckplates, and painting the exterior. Hopefully I will not do any damage to the heritage of the old girl!

The Old Town canoe with serial number 100097 is shown as 18feet long, CS (common sense or standard) grade, HW (heavy water) model with open spruce gunwales, ash decks, seats, and thwarts, and fitted with a keel, outside stems, a floor rack, and sponsons. It was also equipped with a mast seat and step and a rudder. The canoe was built in 1928-29, being finished on May 10, 1929. The original exterior was painted with OT design number 4, but with the star that is a usual part of the design omitted. It was shipped to Lake Mohawk in Sparta, N.J. on May 28, 1929. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link behind the thumbnail image attached below. Design number 4 is also shown (with the star that was omitted on your canoe).

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe.

Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
