Old Paddle

I was wondering if someone might help me with a bit of history on a classic old paddle which has recently come into my possession. It has a label with the name Dey Bros. Ottawa. I was wondering when it would have been manufactured and what type of wood they would have used. It is very light so I was thinking possibly spruce or even pine.

Dey Brothers also did business as Capitol Boat and Canoe Works. The catalog we have (on the Canadian Catalog Collection CD) dates from 1910, and indicates an 1895 start date for the company. Don't know yet when how long they were in business.

Paddles were available in maple, ash, spruce, red pine and cedar. Fancy paddles were available in birdseye maple, curly maple, red birch, walnut, oak cherry and sycamore.
