Wooden Canoes are in the Blood
Jean and I bought an interesting paddle from an antique shop in Dutchess County, NY last weekend. I really didn’t need another paddle but this one was so interesting we picked it up. I don’t know if this was commercially made or if it’s home built. Regardless it is well designed and made – the blade and shaft are shaped well and the paddle balances perfectly when held in one hand at the throat. But I thought the most interesting thing is how it was laminated. The shaft is made of four pieces, two spruce, two mahogany, not the usual two or sometimes three. And the blade is also four pieces – mahogany on one side, spruce on the other. The blade pieces were reversed before it was glued up so regardless of which side you look at the mahogany is on the left, spruce on the right. It's 60" long and 6.3" wide. Hard to capture in photos. I may bring it to Assembly just for fun.
I don’t think it was ever used very much – it had a picture hanging hook screwed on just below the grip, which I removed. Being a traditional one piece paddle type of guy I doubt I will use it very much either but it’s still totally cool.
