While living in Maine...over 10 years ago.... my father bought a canoe from a Trading Post. We used it duck hunting and canoeing the lakes. My dad moved to Tennessee and put it up in the barn. Its been sitting a long time. He recently said I could have it. It needs quite a bit of work. There are couple problems I have. One is the guy who sold my dad the canoe said it was originally a canvas covered canoe but someone stripped off the canvas and fiber glassed the outside, I would like to know if I should redo the fiber glass or restore it to the original canvas? Two, It is a square stern and I need to replace the transom, I was wondering if anyone had some references that they could share on the process of RR the transom. Last, The tag on the canoe says " W.M. Knight, Prescott Maine" Does anyone know anything about these canoes. I know a little bit about the maker but was wondering if anyone else had any info about the maker. I have tried to do some research but have come up a little short. Any info would be great, I plan on restoring this canoe so I can enjoy it! Thanks for your time

Can you attach some pictures of the tag and the boat? I can't find a town named Prescott in Maine and have never heard of a boat builder here named Knight. The list at http://www.wcha.org/history/maine-list.htm shows a Prescott Boat Company from about 1942 to 1952 in Brewer, Maine and the messages at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?5245 relate to another canoe that might have been a Prescott.

I would encourage you to remove the fiberglass and restore the original canvas. The messages and pictures at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?9035 may help you with the fiberglass removal and transom replacement. Good luck,

Benson
