Yeah, about that. I've just tumbled to the fact that the rear external stem lacks holes for the rudder pintle & gudgeons. The external stems are surely original, so this canoe did not start life with a sail. It does have the front seat with mast opening (soon to have a brass ring again), and it does have a 'mast boot' screwed to the floor, so somebody added them sometime in the past. That explains two other mysteries: The front seat appears to be made of maple wood while the read looks to be birch (maybe). Plus the hole pattern for the cane in the seats is a little different - one has holes at the 4 corners (for a square binding pattern) while the other doesn't (for rounded binding).I see lots of Thompson canoes, being in close proximity to Peshtigo. I’ve never seen one with a sail rig.
