Curious about Wooden Canoes
I have been trying to research stem joinery for OTCAs. All the links noted in the forum are not functional. Did I miss something in the upgrade? Any help greatly appreciated.

Here is a thread I responded to some years ago:

Here are some additional threads:

Basically the inwales mate with each other starting at the tip of the deck. The (inside) stem simply butts up under the inwales, and there is a steel brad nailed down through each of the inwales into the top of the stem. Today many people do things in different configurations with the idea of improving on this method (eliminating steel, eliminating nailing down into the end grain of the stem, and perhaps capturing the stem top between the inwales. This is not a bad thing but in canoes that were well kept, the original joinery seemed to work just fine.

Here are some additional images and alternative methods, at least one of which is pretty elaborate:

Hope this helps,
Michael

Hi Benson,
Posted in "Old Town Stem Joinery" , Greg Nolan references you and listed a number of web links that do not function.

There is an add-in which is supposed to fix this but it doesn't seem to be working correctly. Hopefully, our new server manager will be able to fix this soon. There is a manual work around. Greg's message from 2015 at https://forums.wcha.org/threads/12893/ references a message at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?10843-Pics-showing-stem-inwale-deck-area which was created in an old version of the forum software. The new link to that old message is available at https://forums.wcha.org/threads/10843/ now. Note that the unique message number is the same but the link format has changed. The broken link at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?10486-Old-Town-16-foot-17504-8-16 can also be fixed manually by using https://forums.wcha.org/threads/10486/ instead. The Beeby restoration archive went away many years ago but I found an old copy and restored it at http://www.wcha.org/Beeby-canoe/intro.html as well. Let me know if you need anything else. Thanks,

Benson

So there's a problem with links to messages created under vBulletin prior to the migration to Xenforo in 2017?

Yes, Ken has installed the add-on to fix this but it isn't working correctly yet. Ken will be out of town for a while so this will not be resolved quickly. The work around described previously will have to suffice in the mean time. Your patience is appreciated. Thanks,

Benson

The simple form of this fix has been implemented. Please let me know if anyone notices any other issues with old internal links. Thanks,

Benson
