I have a Kineo Special No. M 16503 made by Kennecbec Boat and Canoe. Any idea of the year it was made and the color? Anything unique about this canoe?

Welcome and congratulations, the Kennebec canoe with serial number 16503 as shown on page 179 of volume three in the Kennebec ledgers was assigned to a 16 foot long Kineo Special model type A. It was planked by Roy on August 5th, 1922. The canvas covering was applied by Tuttle on August 12th, 1922. The first filler coat was applied by Grant on the same day. He applied the second filler coat on September 16th, 1922. It was railed by King on September 23rd, 1922. The original color was red. It appears to have shipped in 1923 but the location and date are not clear.

The scans of these build records can be found below. These original Kennebec records are reproduced through the courtesy of the Maine State Museum.

The microfilms and scans of these records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA). A description of the project to preserve records like these is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thank you very much Benson. I really appreciate your efforts and your ability to read the docket. Thank you for your dedication to wooden boats. Your passion is very evident. So interesting that the company only made 8-9 of these canoes per month (which I'm estimating) and I'm guessing this canoe isn't all that rare or valuable.

The production levels varied widely at Kennebec and most other canoe companies. Kennebec recorded other models on different pages within five different volumes so you are only seeing a small part of the total picture in these two images. This canoe isn't unique but they aren't exceptionally common either. Two other Kennebec canoes are currently listed at http://www.wcha.org/classifieds for example. The information at http://forums.wcha.org/index.php?threads/57/ may help you determine the value of yours. The condition is key as with most antiques. Good luck,

Benson

Hi Benson,
I just happened upon this recent post about Kennebec Canoes. We have Kennebec Canoe #16425, which I note is missing from the ledger page here, but understand that different models were recorded elsewhere. What can you tell me about #16425?

Welcome and congratulations, the Kennebec canoe with serial number 16425 shown on page 192 of volume three in the Kennebec ledgers was assigned to a 17 foot long Kenebec model type A. It was planked by Lantigne on July 15th, 1922. The canvas covering was applied by Tuttle on the same day. The first filler coat was applied by Grant on July 22nd, 1922. He applied the second filler coat on August 26th, 1922. It was railed by King on August 26th, 1922. The original color was medium green. It shipped on June 21st, 1923 to location code 23-518. This is probably an invoice number but there isn't any information currently available to further identify it.
