Hi. Looking for information on the following wooden canoe:
Kineo Special. 20006. Built by Kennebec Boat & Canoe in Waterville, Maine. Thanks!

The Kennebec canoe with serial number 20006 is shown on pages 102 and 103 of volume four in the Kennebec ledgers. This was assigned to a 16 foot long Kennebec model, type A with sponsons. It was planked by Cameron on November 20th, 1928. The sponsons were added by Johnson on December 17th, 1928. The canvas covering was applied by Saucier on December 18th, 1928 and the first filler coat was applied by Giroux on the same day. He also applied the second filler coat on December 26th, 1928. It was railed by F. Roy on January 1st, 1929 and the "F 22" (Function number 22 or the keel?) was completed by Bessey(?) on the same day. The original color was green. It shipped to location "29-752" on July 1st, 1929. This location is probably an order number but we don't currently have enough information to identify it.

The scans of these build records can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below. These original Kennebec records are reproduced through the courtesy of the Maine State Museum.

The microfilms and scans of these records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA). I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

More information about this and other Kennebec models can be found in the Kennebec catalogs contained on the Historic Wood Canoe and Boat Company Catalog Collection CDs available from http://store.wcha.org/The-Historic-...pany-Catalog-Collection-Version-2-CD-ROM.html on the web.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Hi Benson,
Thank you so much for all of the information on the history of this canoe. It is so amazing to find out how hand made this item actually is! I do have another question on the canoe. I am helping a friend clean out a property where this canoe was located. My own interest in history prompted me to look up the tag that on the canoe where I found this website. Before doing this I had no idea any organization existed for this purpose. Any helpful hints on assessing the value of the canoe and finding it a new, proper home where it can be preserved and enjoyed? I do not have a background in watercraft/sporting goods so any information would be greatly appreciated. I have attached a picture of the canoe.
Thanks so much!!!

The information at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?57 has a good summary of how to value a wooden canoe. It is usually best to avoid any restoration or repair attempts if your intent is to sell it for the maximum net return. The classifieds at http://wcha.org/pp-classifieds/ are often the fastest way to find a good new home for it. Good luck with the sale,

Benson
