Kennebec Kineo Special #1259

I'm looking for any information pertaining to a conoe we have hanging in our store. The brass plate at the bow has the following information:

Kennebec Boat & Canoe Company
Waterville, Maine
Kineo Special #1259

Any help you could offer will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I know there will be a lot of better info forthcoming, but I did a quick google search and found that this Kineo was produced between 1910 and 1941. So you've got a nice oldie, regardless of what the serial turns up.

Wish I had a brass plate saying anything - just looks cool against the wood.

Levi,

Not sure if a serial number search will help but if Dan Miller or Benson Gray read this they will offer the info if available. In the meantime, here is a teaser on the "Kineo" model. You can order a set of canoe catalogs including the Kennebec's (1910 - 1941) from www.dragonflycanoe.com which may help.

If you are not already a member, please consider joining the WCHA not only for information like the SN search but to help answer other questions that may arise from customers in your shop.

Thanks for visiting the WCHA,

Bredlo,

Why not go shopping at the on-line store for an exact replica of the original Old Town decals?

My guess is that you have the Kennebec canoe with serial number 101259 as shown on page 241 of volume four in the Kennebec ledgers. This was assigned to 18 foot long Kineo Special Model. It was planked by Roy on October 10th, 1925. The canvas covering and first filler coat was applied by Tuttle on October 17th, 1925. It was railed and completed by R. Grant on March 13th, 1926. The original paint color was green. It shipped on April 3rd, 1926 to "26-86". This is probably an order number but we don't currently have enough information to trace out this location. The original Kennebec records are stored at the Maine State Museum. I am unable to attach a scan of these records since their policies do not permit any electronic reproduction of their materials.

The microfilms of these records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA). I hope that you will join or contribute to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.html to join. More information about the Kineo Special and other Kennebec models can be found in the Kennebec catalogs contained on the Historic Wood Canoe and Boat Company Catalog Collection CD available from http://merchandise.wcha.org/index.php?cPath=90_91 and http://www.dragonflycanoe.com/cdrom.htm on the web.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Old Town did start using a brass plate logo in 1979 that you could put on your canoe or you can get a copy of the original decal logo as Ric mentioned. The discussion at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?t=413 shows examples of these two options.

Where?

Cedar Creek Interiors as in Cedar Creek that runs through Cedarburg, WI, 12 miles from me? If so, I'd love to see this beauty.

Good ideas, both! Hadn't seen the replica waterslide decals -- that much just do the trick. Very slick.

Thanks guys,
Brad
