Kennebec # M 2597

Can you confirm the exact overall length in a straight line between the extreme ends of this canoe? The leading M usually means that you need to add 100,000 to find the correct serial number as described at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?5617 from a similar canoe. The Kennebec with serial number 2597 is 16 feet long from 1914. My guess is that you have the Kennebec canoe with number 102597 which is a 17 foot long "Kineo Special" model shown on pages 240 and 241 of volume four in the Kennebec ledgers. It was planked by Lane on March 15th, 1930. The canvas covering and first filler coat were applied by Grant on April 5th, 1930 and he applied the second filler coat on May 17th, 1930. It was railed by Thompson on May 24th, 1930. The "F 22" (Function number 22 or the keel?), "F24" (Function number 24 or the thwarts?), and "F28" were completed by Thib. on July 16th, 1932. The original color was red. It appears to have been originally shipped on May, 27th 1930 to location "30-325". This location is probably an order number but we don't currently have enough information to identify it. This has "Returned" written over it and a note about a "(cash sale 7/18/32)" so it was probably damaged in transit in 1930, returned, repaired, and sold again in 1932.

The scans of these build records can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below. These original Kennebec records are reproduced through the courtesy of the Maine State Museum.

The microfilms and scans of these records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA). I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Can you attach a picture? Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
