I have a Kennebec Canoe Company canoe with serial number 19157. Can you tell me the model and year of construction?
Thanks, Kathy

The Kennebec canoe with serial number 19157 is shown on pages 119 and 118 of volume three in the Kennebec ledgers. This was assigned to 16 foot long Kennebec Model, type a. It was planked by Mausell on September 18th, 1926. The canvas covering was applied by Thibodeau on October 16th, 1926 and he also applied the first filler coat on October 23rd, 1926. The second filler coat was applied by F. Thibodeau on November 13th, 1926. It was railed by Currie on November 14th, 1926. The original paint color was red. The shipping date was March 26th, 1927 to location "27-471". This location is probably an order number but we don't currently have enough information to identify it. The original Kennebec records are stored at the Maine State Museum. I am unable to attach a scan of these records since their policies do not permit any electronic reproduction of their materials.

The microfilms of these records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA). I hope that you will join or contribute to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.html to join.

More information about this and other Kennebec models can be found in the Kennebec catalogs contained on the Historic Wood Canoe and Boat Company Catalog Collection CD available from http://merchandise.wcha.org/ and http://www.dragonflycanoe.com/cdrom.htm on the web.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thanks so much for the quick response. This canoe is in the rafters of our sailing yacht club on Virginia's Northern Neck. The canvas covering is long gone and none of the old timer's can seem to remember where the canoe came from. However, we've just cleaned it up and will add a display plaque with the information you provided us. I will be sending a donation.
