I have a canoe made by the Kennebec Canoe Company. The serial number is 103251. I am looking to find out information about this canoe (year it was made, point of origin, value, etc.).

The Kennebec canoe with serial number 103251 is shown twice on pages 284 and 285 of volume five in the Kennebec ledgers. This was assigned to a 17 foot long Kineo special model. It was planked by Grant on December 17th, 1932. Mansell canvased it and applied the first filler coat on December 24th, 1932 and January 7th, 1933 respectively. The second filler coat was applied by Mitchell and F. M. T. on April 15th, 1933. Grant railed it on April 15th, 1933. The "F 22" (Function number 22 or the keel?) was completed by Thib. on April 22nd, 1933. "F24" (Function number 24 or the thwarts?) and "F28" (Function number 28 or the painting?) were completed by Mansell on May 13th, 1933 and the original colors were a blue body with a two inch yellow stripe. It was shipped to location "33-106" on May 12th, 1933. This location is probably an order number but we don't currently have enough information to identify it. (The last two dates appear to be out of sequence but that is how they appear in the record.)

The scans of this build record can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below. These original Kennebec records are reproduced through the courtesy of the Maine State Museum.

The microfilms and scans of these records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA). I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

More information about this and other Kennebec models can be found in the Kennebec catalogs contained on the Historic Wood Canoe and Boat Company Catalog Collection CDs available from the WCHA store and http://www.dragonflycanoe.com/cdrom.htm on the web.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. The information at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?57 has a good summary of how to value a canoe like this. There are three other Kennebec canoes currently listed at http://www.wcha.org/pp-classifieds/ for comparison. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
