About 30 years ago I built a custom house, sided with 1x12 clear vertical grain Western Red Cedar lumber. The square edged planks were milled with shiplap edges and a 1/4" bead on the exposed shoulder and installed vertically. I'm currently re-visiting this home to make some alterations and today I salvaged some of the old siding to make into canoe planking. At the time we used lots of cedar and much of it was quite tight-grained stuff. Who knew I would re-use it many years later?
Here's a portion of the house with siding:
Some of the material ripped rough sized for later precise cutting:
End grain of several pieces with tight grain. Not bad after 30 years exposed to weather!
