I just finished a couple of topside planking repairs on my project canoe (Maine guide canoe, unknown builder). So I flip it over to start bottom repairs and found this.

Some previous repairer had installed a patch with tacks that were too short and didn't clinch! Only 3 of the 8 tacks were still in place. The rest might have come out when I removed the fiberglass. I don't remember seeing them but that was a while ago.

And the patch was too thin, only 0.11 inch when the rest of the planking is 0.18. It would have been closer to the mark if they installed 2 layers and maybe sanded it a bit!

But apart from my complaints, I have to say that most of the planking is in good shape – rough but solid. I will have a lot of sanding and fairing to do....
