copper stem bands ?

Have a Greenwood canoe that came to me with about 3/8" wide copper stem bands . These bands are nothing more than a piece of copper pipe which has been cut in half . Apparently this was a common factory practice . Can any one advise ?

Hi Dave,

I have had numerous Greenwoods come through the shop and a good number of them had the sawn copper tube band. Could really not tell the difference between the sawn ones and brass till they were removed.
