Check out my sailing canoe.

Just wanted to share some photos of my homebuilt sailing canoe!

This is my first experience with sailing of any kind, it’s all been very experimental and i’ve tried many different rigs over the past year or so. I finally understand the physics now, and every time i take it out i find something else to improve upon or add. At this point i’m very happy with how well it sails.

It’s surprisingly stable in 40+ km/h winds and small whitecaps and i have no problem pushing the sails hard. The mast is 1.5 inch hemlock from home depot, the mast hole and bottom block were already built into the canoe. It has proven very strong so far.

The leeboards work in any position. I think the COE is very close in tune with the leeboard yoke. It sails gently weather helm usually.

I’m no stranger to paddling, but i’ve totally fallen in love with the power of a sail. I use it in a very shallow muskeg for testing, but soon i will fill the front and rear with float foam and feel comfortable taking it into deeper water. Lots of things to improve upon still but it works great! I will be building a larger, more proper sailboat in the future.

Nice! Do you have the canoe sailing book? It’s worth getting, he has a lot of sail plan ideas and info on all the different parts too. Your setup looks good. Next sail upgrade- make some high thread count bed sheet sails!

This looks like fun. The book Floyd mentioned is great and available at the link below. You may find that a set of air bags from a white water canoe might be an easier solution than float foam. Enjoy,

Benson
