Canoe Info Please?

I am just about complete with my Old Towne canoe restoration...I am having the seats recaned so no photos yet. I and my Mom, who grew up canoeing with my Grandparents in Wisconsin, are very interested in whatever info can be provided about the canoe Grampa bought. While the third digit is a bit hard to read, I believe the number is 57436 (though it could also be 57136). It is in excellent shape and I can't wait for spring to take my Mom, wife and daughters on many paddles throughout the Midwest! Thank you,

My guess is that you have the Old Town canoe with serial number 57436 since it shipped to Wisconsin. This is a 17 foot long, AA (or top) grade, Ideal model with red western cedar planking, open mahogany gunwales, mahogany decks, mahogany seats, mahogany thwarts, and half ribs. It was built between November and December, 1919. The original exterior paint color was white. It shipped on February 9th, 1920 to Appleton, Wisconsin.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 57136 is an 17 foot long, AA (or top) grade, Otca model with open spruce gunwales, twenty inch mahogany decks, mahogany thwarts, mahogany seats, and a keel. It was built between November and December, 1919. The original exterior paint color was dark red. It was shipped on April 28th, 1920 to Scranton, Penna.

Scans showing both of these build records are attached below. These scans and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Great News!

Benson:

I believe the first number is correct now with your information, as my Grandfather lived in Appleton for much of his life, my Mom's recollection is the canoe was white (prior to it being painted red which is what I restored it to) and all the other information you provide matches the canoe I have. I want to thank you very much for your efforts to connect me and my Mom with this information. Mark
