Can someone please provide the build record for an Old Town canoe that I just purchased for restoration? The canoe number is 172508 15. I want to verify that it is indeed an 1962 and that the trim matches the build records.
thanks
joe
The Old Town canoe with serial number 172508 is a 15 foot long fifty pound model with a keel. It was built between October and November, 1962. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on July 29th, 1963 to South Hampton, Long Island, New York. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.
This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to join.
It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. This was built after the grades had been eliminated so it should have spruce for the inside gunwales and mahogany on the outside. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
Thanks Benson, much appreciated! It is indeed light with planking less that 1/8 in thickness and very short decks. The canvas was dark green but the outwales are also spruce. Thanks also for the link to the complete build record!
