1941 Old Town HW Canoe For Abercrombie and Fitch

Greetings, Thomas--

Old Town 108666 is a 17 foot, AA (top) grade Otca model canoe that was completed between December 1930 and February 1931. It has red Western cedar planking and is trimmed in mahogany, with open mahogany gunwales and 20" decks. It has a keel, outside stems and a floor rack and was originally painted maroon. The canoe was shipped to Macy's in New York on what appears to be March 12, 1931.

Image of the scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available athttp://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

More information on the Old Town Company can be found in Sue Audette's book, Old Town, Our First Hundred Years, which is available through the WCHA store and most booksellers, eBay, Amazon, and public libraries.

If your canoe is 16 feet long with short decks then my guess is that you have the Old Town canoe with serial number 99980. This is a 16 foot long, AA (or top) grade, HW (Heavy Water) model with open mahogany gunwales, mahogany decks, mahogany thwarts, mahogany seats, a keel, a floor rack, and sponsons. It was built between November, 1928 and March, 1929. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on March 27th, 1929 to Abercrombie and Fitch in New York City. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

Kathy has already explained about the build record project so I won't repeat it here. The chart at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/oldtown_chart.html indicates that an Old Town canoe from 1941 should have a serial number in the 130,000 range. It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Please attach some pictures of the serial numbers from each end of your canoe, the decks, the interior, and more to help us identify it. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Mr. Gray I believe you are correct we were looking at it upside down. I am going to take some photographs and send. How does one value the market price of such a canoe? Also how do I attach a photo to this thread?
