16' Old Town 124056

I just acquired this canoe and I have eagerly begun cleaning and restoring it. I learned from the seller that he had glassed it in 1980. But, thankfully, the glass and resin have been easy to remove (some even peeled off during the drive home). There is only minor rot at the stern and bow.

Does the archives contain any information

Serial Number 124056
Originally shipped to Brookfield, Connecticut. (According to a letter from Old Town to the seller.)

I see what appear to be cracks in two ribs. There is no distortion of the rib. Should these be replaced?

Of course, I regret joining this fine guild just as the annual assembly was taking place, maybe next year.

Thanks,

Michael Mahony

124056 appears on a 16' Old Town HW model in CS grade. It had open spruce gunwales, and ash seats, decks and thwarts. It came equipped with a keel and floor rack and was originally painted light blue. It shipped to the Candlewood Lake Club in Brookfield, CT in May of 1938. A copy of the build record is attached.

Scans of approximately 210,000 records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Regarding the rib repair question... If they seem stable and there is no noticable deflection when you press on the outside, you may be to do a backside repair, though replacing the ribs is probably better as long as you have the canvas (or fiberglass!) off.
