Curious about Wooden Canoes
I believe this number to be correct. However, the 5 is weak and the 9 is questionable. I believe this canoe to be a 20' Guide built in the 30's or possibly early 40's. Thanks.

The Old Town with serial number 112529 is a 14 foot lapstrake outboard motor boat. The serial numbers 112527, 112523, and 112522 are all 20 foot long Guide's models so my guess is that you have 112523. This is a CS grade with western red cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, a center keel, and bilge keels. It was built between April and May, 1933. The original exterior paint color was G. S. (Guide's Special) green. It shipped on May 27th, 1933 to Sebago Lake, Maine. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the thumbnail image attached below.

These scans were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. Additional information about the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or contribute to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
