I was watching a Youtube video the other day. The fella had a tip for quickly filling in pores on open grain wood: apply the 1st varnish coat with a fine grit sandpaper & rub in the varnish. He says the dust created by sanding will tend to fill in the wood pores. I'm thinking this is a great idea for rib tips - they seem to take many coats to fill.
